WW2 Civilian Casualties

During World War 2, nearly 200 Eastbournians were killed by enemy action. At least 69 of them are buried in Langney Cemetery.
There is a civilian war grave section within D.Gen. The section has 28 graves encompassing 43 victims.
Two of the graves contain the remains of 7 victims of the Spencer Road shelter bombing who were unable to be individually identified.
The others are buried throughout the cemetery.

Francis Bates
Francis was killed 22 Oct 1940 during an air raid on Bourne Street and Langney Road. He was 47 years old.
He lived at 2 Bourne Street with his wife, Ethel.
Christopher John Audubon Bonfiglioni
Christopher was with his mother (below) when they were both killed in the bombing of Spencer Road 3 Apr 1943. He was just 9 years old.
They lived at 67 Susan’s Road.
Dorothy Ann Bonfiglioli
Dorothy was killed along with her son in the bombing of Spencer Road 3 Apr 1943. She was 43 years old.
They lived at 67 Susan’s Road.
Ellen Chapman
Ellen was killed 6th Jun 1943 during an air raid on Beach Road. She was 61 years old.
She lived at 39 Beach Road with her husband.
Annie Amelia Child
Annie died in Beach Road 6th June 1943. She was 37 years old.
She lived at 39 Beach Road with her husband. She was the niece of Ellen Chapman, above.
Charlotte Elizabeth Dry
Charlotte was killed at her home during an air raid on 29th Dec 1942. She was 77 years old.
She was a widow living at 62 Victoria Drive.
William H Glen
William was killed 14th Sep 1940 at 14 Firle Road. He was 55 years old.
Douglas Macintosh Gower
Douglas was killed 26th Oct 1942. He was injured at the junction of Northbourne Road and Seaside due to an air raid and later died at the Princess Alice Hospital. He was just 13 years old.
He lived at 20 The Circus with his parents, Herbert and Janet Gower.
Lucy Alice Hall
Lucy was injured 19th Nov 1940. She died later the same day at the Princess Alice Hospital. She was 50 years old.
She lived at 12 Marine Parade with her husband.
Benjamin Hillidge
Benjamin was killed during the bombing of Beach Road on 6th Jun 1943. He was 54 years old.
He was a fireguard living at 39 Beach Road.
Frank David Hurd
Frank was injured on 11th Oct 1940 at Sidney Road. He died later the same day at the Princess Alice hospital. He was 19 years old.
He lived at 5 Poplar Cottages, Hoad Road with his parents Frank and Annie.
Lily Jackson
Lily was killed at 5 Wilmington Terrace on 15th Jan 1943. She was 50 years old.
She lived at 38 Avondale Road.
Mary Ann Johnson
Mary was injured 24th May 1941 at Channel View Road. She died 14th Jun 1941 at St Mary’s Hospital. She was 76 years old.
He lived at 10 Channel View Road with her husband William.
Ann Lilian Jones
Ann was killed 13th Sep 1940 at 27 Hyde Road. She was 70 years old.
Andrew Leitch
Andrew was killed at the Technical Institute in Grove Road on 4th Jun 1943. He was 43 years old.
He was from Shoreditch.
Samuel Marley
Samuel was injured on 26th Oct 1942 and died later the same day at the Princess Alice Hospital. He was 35 years old.
He was a Fireguard. He lived at 65 Queen’s Crescent with his wife Phoebe.
Frank Moore
Frank was killed at the Electricity Works in Roselands on 26th Aug 1942. He was 46 years old.
He lived at 102 Brodrick Road with his wife Annie.
Mary Adeline Penfold
Mary was injured on 13th Sep 1940. She died later the same day at St Mary’s Hospital. She was 16 years old.
She lived at 25 Gildredge Road.
Margaret Perry
Margaret, along with her sister Mary (below) were killed at their home on 7th Mar 1943. She was 62 years old.
She lived at 24A Meads Street.
Mary Jane Perry
Mary, along with her sister Margaret (above) were killed at their home on 7th Mar 1943. She was 65 years old.
She lived at 24A Meads Street.
David Ronald Ripley
David was killed at home along with his parents (below) on 26th Oct 1942. He was just 12 years old.
He lived at 69 Willoughby Crescent.
Mabel Ripley
Mabel was killed at home with her husband and son on 26th Oct 1942. She was 57 years old.
She lived at 69 Willoughby Crescent.
William Ripley
William was killed at home with his wife and son on 26th Oct 1942. He was 56 years old. His brother, Moses (below) was killed by enemy action two years prior.
He lived at 69 Willoughby Crescent.
Moses Ripley
Moses was killed at his home on 14th Sep 1940. He was 48 years old. He’s the brother of William Ripley above.
He lived at 14 Firle Road.
Florrie Myra Selway
Florrie was killed during the bombing of Marks and Spencer’s in Terminus Road on 18th Dec 1942. She was 31 years old.
She lived at 60 Melbourne Road She was a Fire Guard.
Emily Taylerson
Emily was killed at her home on 7th 1943. She was 48 years old.
She lived at 10 Hardwick Road with her husband George.
Lilian Gertrude Thorne
Lilian was killed at 2 Burlington Place on 3rd Apr 1943. She was 52 years old.
She lived at 14 Cornfield Terrace with her husband Bert.
Jean Turner
Jean was killed outside Bobby’s in Terminus Road on 18th Dec 1942. She was 11 years old.
She lived at 111 Northbourne Road.
Ellen Jane Tydeman
Ellen was killed at her home on 7th Feb 1943. She was 83 years old.
She lived at 10 Hardwick Road.
Jane Emily Vigor
Jane was killed at 10 Hardwick Road on 7th Feb 1943. She was 76 years old.
She lived at 10 Hardwick Road.
Known Unto God
There are two headstones that simply read “Known Unto God”. Interred between both graves are the unidentified remains of seven victims of the Spencer Road bombing on 3rd Apr 1943, where the above ground air raid shelter took a direct hit.
Miss Prodger, Mr Mason, Mrs Crisp, Miss Brook, Mrs Pidcock, Mr Edmonds and Mr Peter Horton.
Burials in other sections
These civilian graves are scattered across several sections. They all have a Find A Grave memorial page but the majority do not have photographs of their headstones or plots. This is because the stones are buried, removed or they didn’t have one in the first place. It’s a WIP to uncover these graves.

WWII Eastbourne Firemen
On Sunday 7th February 1943, Eastbourne Fire Station, then in Grove Road, took a direct hit during an air raid on the town. Six personnel were killed. Four of them are buried together in B. Gen, next to the Commonwealth War Graves. The other two are buried in Ocklynge Cemetery.
